An Archmage in the City

Alan White, a reclusive Archmage one step from Grand Magus, descends from the Misty Mountains to fulfill his master Merlin's last wish: marry Sophie Black, heiress of the Black family. Arriving in Los Angeles, he rescues Sophie from an Anderson family ambush. They spend a night together—she leaves him money and walks away.
