Evander Huxley, the son of the Huxley family, is ranked fourth among his siblings. His father, Alaric Huxley, has him later in life and is expected to cherish him. However, Evander goes missing as a child. After being found and returned to the family, he is overshadowed by his adopted brother, Cassian Huxley, who manipulates his way into favor within the household. Cassian secretly schemes against Evander, framing him for various wrongdoings. As a result, Evander becomes labeled as a hopeless failure in his family's eyes, someone who can never amount to anything. Meanwhile, Cassian basks in love and attention, while Evander's suffering and feelings are completely ignored. Forced to live a life worse than that of a stray dog, Evander endures immense injustice. One day, after Cassian assaults their eldest sister, Isolde Huxley, he frames Evander for the crime. Enraged, the family kills Evander on the spot—only for him to be reborn.
